TRENTON, Michigan: Public Schools athletic director charged with embezzlement

The school district’s athletic director was arraigned Friday in 33rd District Court on one count of felony embezzlement.

Bret Woodley, 40, was charged before Judge James Kersten.

A plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf and personal bond was set at $5,000.

A preliminary examination of the evidence against him is scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 13 at 33rd District Court.

Woodley, who is an assistant principal at Trenton High School, also is a part-time seasonal employee for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department at the Kennedy Aquatic Center.

According to a report published in Trenton Patch, Woodley allegedly embezzled money from the aquatic center between July 14 and 17.

Police Chief James Nardone declined comment Friday afternoon as to how the department learned of the embezzlement and how much Woodley is accused of embezzling.

Felony embezzlement amounts are defined between $1,000 to $20,000. The charge is punishable up to five years in prison and fines of up to three times the amount stolen.

“The only thing I will say is that this case is disappointing on so many levels,” Nardone said. “It is very early in the investigation. We have to let the system do its job.”

A call Friday afternoon to the Trenton Public Schools administrative office was not returned.

Woodley was placed on administrative leave without pay by Trenton officials this week.

In addition to being the assistant principal at Trenton High School and the district's Athletic Director, Woodley has worked as the assistant swimming supervisor at the Aquatic Center since 2000, where he earns $10.71 per hour, according to Scott Church, assistant city administrator and human resources director at the City of Trenton.

As a part-time seasonal employee Woodley works from May to August. His duties are to oversee the day-to-day operations during the operational months of the city pool. He is also responsible for training and supervising staff and making sure the pool functions properly, according to Joann Perna, director of parks and recreation.

Woodley is on administrative leave with pay from the Trenton Public School District. He earns about $83,500 annually as assistant principal for Trenton High School. He does not collect any additional monies for his dual role as the district's athletic director, according to the Trenton Public Schools website.
