Former Portage Public Schools official gets one day in jail in embezzlement case in Michigan

A former Portage Public Schools official who used the district’s credit card to pay for more than $1,000 in personal expenses was sentenced to time served Monday.
Marcia Ann Zahrt, 48, was sentenced to one day in jail by Kalamazoo County Circuit Judge J. Richardson Johnson.
Zahrt pleaded no contest in February to a misdemeanor charge of embezzlement of $200 to $1,000.
An original charge of felony embezzlement of $999 to $20,000, along with three counts of stealing/retaining a financial-transaction device without consent were dismissed at Monday’s hearing in front of Kalamazoo County Circuit Judge J. Richardson Johnson.
The case against Zahrt stemmed from her use of a school district credit card to pay for $1,074 in personal expenses.
Zahrt, who was an assistant in the district’s human resources department, was terminated from her job on Sept. 5 when the embezzlement was reported to Portage police.
Johnson said during Monday’s hearing that Zahrt had “taken care of the financial aspects that are involved in this charge.”
In addition to her jail sentence, Johnson also ordered Zahrt to pay attorney fees, court costs, fines and state fees.
