Missing church funds leads to embezzlement arrest in Mississippi

A man has been arrested on charges of stealing money from a church.

Jimmy D. Bean, 38, was arrested by the Lee County Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigation Division on Friday.

A church in Lee County contacted the sheriff’s department reporting money missing from the church’s bank account.

An investigation revealed more than $20,000 was taken from the church over an extended period of time, said Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson.

Bean’s bond was set at $75,000.

Bean is a former Tupelo Police Department officer but was not employed there at the time of his arrest. He was also indicted in federal court on charges of violating civil rights under the color of law in a separate case.

Johnson said the case is still under investigation.
